01Why flat water matters
If you've never ridden true freshwater flat, it's a different sport. Upwind angles sharpen, pop is cleaner, crashes hurt less. The IJsselmeer is the classroom that Europe's best freestyle riders grew up on.
The lake is shallow (average 5m, much of it knee to waist deep) which is why it doesn't develop the chop of open water.
02Where to ride
Hindeloopen and Workum on the west coast are the classic learner launches — shallow, sandy, school networks.
Makkum has a dedicated cable park next to the kite launch, if you want crossover days.
Enkhuizen is the foil-scene hub — flat and open, good for distance riding.
03The season
May through September. Spring is cold but clear; summer is variable; September is often the best month — still warm, fewer crowds, reliable SW wind.
Wetsuit-wise: 4/3 April-May, shorty June-August, 3/2 September. The water is freshwater, cold, and slower to warm than the sea.
