01The lagoon

Picture a flat, warm, shallow bay. Now extend it forty kilometres. Now stand at one end and see desert. That's Dakhla.

The Atlantic is on the other side of a narrow sand spit — a five-minute walk from most camps. When the lagoon gets crowded (it rarely does), you cross the dune and have the ocean to yourself.

02The season, properly

April through October is the classic window. Peak reliability runs April-May and September-October — fewer crowds, temperature still friendly, wind machine on.

Summer can get hot (35°C+) and the morning wind weaker as the desert thermal compresses. Shoulder seasons are the sweet spot for most.

03The camp system

Dakhla isn't a town you stay in — you stay at a camp strung along the lagoon. Full-board, all-inclusive, shared dining, a ride across the bay most days.

Ocean Vagabond, Westpoint and Dakhla Club are the best-known. All have English-speaking instruction. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for peak season.

04Getting there

Fly into Casablanca or Marrakech, then a domestic to Dakhla (VIL). Some direct flights from Paris seasonally. Budget a full travel day each way.

Frequently asked questions

03 questions
  • Yes. The camps are self-contained, the lagoon is supervised, the Moroccan Sahara coast is politically stable and friendly. The only risk is staying longer than you planned.

  • A 9m is the workhorse. 11m for lighter days, 7m for the windiest afternoons. Much more moderate than Tarifa or Cape Town.

  • The White Dune, the oyster farms at Imlili, a desert trip to the interior. Don't expect to find much nightlife — this is a retreat, not a party.
